Viva la Vida

Jay and I had the opportunity last week to see Coldplay in concert on their Viva la Vida tour. The show was unbelievable. It was done with such excellence that both of us were blown away. From the lights to the sound to the gorgeous instruments and crazy energy on stage…the whole thing was just brilliant. But as the crowd sang along with one of the most popular songs, I felt something was missing. I couldn’t put a finger on it right away, but as the night went on it became clear: we were singing our lungs out but not worshiping God.
Let me explain - I’m not saying that every concert needs to be full of worship songs. I am not saying that we should not go to concerts that aren’t put on by a “Christian” band. What I am saying is that the experience lacked something that I have experienced before when worshiping with thousands of people. When Hillsong came to Toronto, for example, the decibel level in the place was insane. There’s a different kind of power that invades a place when it’s not about the band, or the words themselves, but about God at the centre of it all. When the Holy Spirit takes over a concert, it just feels different. Have any of you felt this before?
Going to see Coldplay was an incredible experience. But intentionally worshiping God through music is a whole other ballgame. When it’s not about Chris Martin. Or the words to Viva la Vida. Or the melody of Yellow. Whatever concert we’re at, let’s stop worshiping the music, the band, and the lightshow, but turn our eyes to the creator of sound, light, talent, and people.
Have a great week ladies,
Michelle
